The Benefits of Nature on Well-being

Nature is one of our most powerful tools for improving our well-being.

Throughout history, our ancestors maintained a deep bond with nature, recognising its role as a source of sustenance, inspiration, and spiritual nourishment. However, as urbanisation and technological advancements have accelerated, our connection to nature has gradually eroded. We have become increasingly disconnected from the earth, its rhythms, and the therapeutic power it holds.

Fortunately, a growing body of scientific evidence is now shedding light on nature’s immense positive impact on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. From reducing stress and anxiety to boosting creativity and cognitive function, nature possesses many benefits waiting to be harnessed.

As we dive deeper into this exploration, we will uncover fascinating insights into how nature influences our well-being. We will discover the psychological and physiological changes that occur when we immerse ourselves in natural environments and how these experiences can profoundly shape our outlook on life.

This is one of the reasons that I am so passionate about protecting the environment.

Have you ever felt disconnected from the world around you? Or think that you are on autopilot?

During the pandemic, a YouGov poll revealed that 73% of UK adults said connecting with nature has been important for managing their well-being. In its report on Nature, the Mental Health Foundation states how connecting with nature benefits our mental health.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature can reduce stress, boost mood, and improve overall health.

Here are just a few of nature’s many benefits on well-being.

1. Nature reduces stress

Nature is a natural stress reliever. Spending time in nature has been shown to lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. We can relax and let go of our worries in nature.

2. Nature can boost mood

Nature has a positive effect on our mood.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature can increase happiness and reduce depression and anxiety.

Being in nature generates several positive emotions, such as joy, creativity and calmness.

The natural beauty of nature has a calming effect on the mind, allowing us to feel more content, optimistic and at peace.

I believe you can forge an ancestry connection between you and the earth by standing barefoot in the grass and soil, taking in all the sensations from your senses—the colour, the smell, and how the earth feels underneath your foot. Immerse yourself.

Those more connected to nature also tend to be pro-environmental, which can lead to activities around improving the environment.

3. Nature can improve physical health

Nature has been shown to have a positive impact on physical health.

Walking in nature can improve cardiovascular health, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system.

Nature has also been shown to improve sleep quality, which is essential for good health.

Additionally, nature can improve the following.

  • Reduced blood pressure. Spending time in nature can also help to lower your blood pressure. One study found that people who spent time in a natural setting had lower blood pressure than those who did not.
  • Reduced heart rate. Nature can also help to slow your heart rate. One study found that people who spent time in a natural setting had a slower heart rate than those who did not.
  • Increased physical activity. Spending time in nature can also encourage you to be more physically active. One study found that people who lived in areas with more green space were more likely to be physically active than those who lived in areas with less green space.

4. Nature can enhance creativity

Nature is an excellent source of inspiration.

The natural beauty and serenity of nature can stimulate creativity and boost productivity. I have started a bonsai tree nursery.

Being surrounded by nature can help to clear the mind and improve focus, making it easier to develop new ideas and solve problems.

5. Nature provides a sense of awe and wonder

Nature can inspire a sense of awe and wonder.

Being surrounded by the beauty and power of nature can give us a sense of perspective and remind us of the larger world around us.

A window view of the trees and green surroundings can help you feel connected to the world.

I find visiting nature a humbling and grounding experience that has improved my overall well-being.

I visited some iconic and picturesque places in Cornwall with the most spectacular sceneries in the summer of 2022.

Eden Project

I had the incredible pleasure of visiting the renowned Eden Project in the summer of 2022, and I must say, it was an experience like no other. Nestled in the heart of Cornwall, England, the Eden Project is a vast botanical garden and ecological marvel that left me in awe of the beauty and diversity of our natural world. I was in absolute awe of the nature surrounding me.

The Eden Project is not just a place of awe-inspiring beauty; it is also a hub of creativity and innovation. The site hosts various events, workshops, and exhibits that promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices. I had the opportunity to attend fascinating workshops. I witnessed firsthand the commitment of the Eden Project to inspiring positive change in our lives and the world around us.

One of the highlights of my visit was discovering the educational and conservation efforts undertaken by the Eden Project. I learned about the importance of sustainable living, the preservation of endangered species, and the vital role plants play in supporting our planet’s health.

Here are some photos I took.

Japanese Garden

During my recent visit to the Japanese Garden in Cornwall, I also had a truly remarkable experience. This serene sanctuary provided a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As I entered the Garden, a sense of calm washed over me. The meticulously manicured landscape was a feast for the eyes, with vibrant flowers blooming in a symphony of colours. The air was filled with the delicate fragrance of cherry blossoms, adding to the enchanting ambience.

The Japanese Garden inspired my collection of bonsai trees. I’ve shared some photos I took.

The Goliath Falls

The Goliath Fall was just spectacular. It is a National Nature Reserve.

I was surrounded by trees and walked along the River Fowey.

My husband, daughter and I climbed on rocks and hills to get closer to the river. We were too adventurous to walk along the path.

My husband sat on one of the rocks and put his feet in the river. He claimed that his foot issue was gone after that.
